The clients who come to us having taken fish oil for years and still show poor omega-3 status almost always share one thing: they've been taking triglyceride-form oil in a softgel with no phospholipid carrier and their cells haven't been absorbing it efficiently.
Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA are structurally essential to every cell membrane in the body. The brain is approximately 60% fat by dry weight, with DHA making up a significant proportion of neuronal membrane composition. The cardiovascular system depends on EPA to regulate inflammation, platelet aggregation, and triglyceride metabolism. Neither system functions optimally when omega-3 intake is consistently inadequate, which in the Indian diet, it almost always is.
The gap between taking an omega-3 supplement and actually raising cellular omega-3 status comes down to two things: absorption form and dose. Standard fish oil delivers omega-3s in triglyceride form requiring re-esterification in the gut before they can enter circulation and cell membranes. Krill oil delivers omega-3s in phospholipid form, the same structural form your cell membranes are built from, absorbed directly without conversion, at significantly higher cellular uptake rates.
Marine Omega-3 Complex uses both. SuperbaBoost® Antarctic krill oil provides phospholipid-bound EPA and DHA for direct cellular absorption. Deep-sea Peruvian anchovy oil provides high-dose EPA and DHA in natural triglyceride form to reach the therapeutic concentrations needed for cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes. The two sources are complementary, not redundant.
Added to that: AstaReal® astaxanthin, the most potent lipid-soluble antioxidant in the formula protects the omega-3s from oxidation both in the capsule and in the body, and crosses the blood-brain barrier to provide direct CNS antioxidant protection. Natural Vitamin E from mixed tocopherols provides additional oxidative stability. And peppermint oil at 30mg addresses the taste tolerability problem that causes most people to abandon fish oil not only as flavoring, but as an antispasmodic that prevents omega-3-associated reflux.

Four ingredients worth understanding specifically
The formula has 5 ingredients. Four of them are in here for reasons that go beyond standard omega-3 coverage.
SuperbaBoost® Krill Oil - 755mg · Phospholipid-bound omega-3s
SuperbaBoost® is sourced from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, one of the most sustainably managed marine fisheries in the world. Krill's position at the base of the marine food chain means minimal bioaccumulation of heavy metals and environmental toxins compared to larger fish.
The critical distinction is the phospholipid form. Krill omega-3s are esterified to phospholipids, the same molecular structure that forms your cell membranes. This allows them to be absorbed directly through the intestinal wall and incorporated into cell membranes. Clinical studies consistently show higher plasma and cellular EPA/DHA levels from lower doses of krill oil versus higher doses of standard fish oil.
SuperbaBoost® also provides 52.85mg of choline per serving as phosphatidylcholine. Choline is an essential nutrient for brain structure, neurotransmitter synthesis (acetylcholine), and liver fat metabolism.
Deep-Sea Peruvian Anchovy Oil - 1150mg · High-dose EPA/DHA
Anchovy is one of the cleanest and most concentrated sources of marine omega-3s as its small, short-lived, low in the food chain, and sustainably sourced from the cold, nutrient-rich waters off Peru. The oil is extracted and processed in natural triglyceride form, the same form found in fresh fish tissue, with significantly better oxidative stability and bioavailability than the ethyl ester form used in many pharmaceutical omega-3 products.
At 1150mg per serving, the anchovy oil provides the bulk of the EPA (517.5mg) and DHA (368mg) in this formula, the therapeutic-range dose needed for meaningful cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes. Combined with the krill oil contribution, total EPA per serving is 630.75mg and total DHA is 420.85mg, above the thresholds used in cardiovascular outcome research.
AstaReal® Astaxanthin - 2mg · CNS-active antioxidant
AstaReal® is produced by Fuji Chemical Industries from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, the world's most studied and most bioavailable source of natural astaxanthin. It is not synthetic astaxanthin derived from petrochemicals, which accounts for the majority of cheaper astaxanthin products.
Astaxanthin's role in this formula is dual. First: oxidative protection of the EPA and DHA in the formula itself. Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated so highly susceptible to oxidation both in the softgel and after absorption. Rancid omega-3s don't just lose efficacy; oxidised lipids are actively harmful. AstaReal® prevents this. Second: astaxanthin is one of the very few antioxidants that crosses the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier thereby providing direct neuroprotective and eye-protective antioxidant activity at the CNS level that most antioxidants cannot reach.
Natural Vitamin E (D-Alpha Tocopherol) - 10mg · Oxidative stability
Vitamin E from mixed tocopherols serves a specific structural role: it provides additional oxidative stabilisation of the omega-3 fatty acids both in the capsule and after absorption in the body. D-Alpha Tocopherol is the natural, most bioactive form of Vitamin E, not the synthetic DL-Alpha Tocopherol used in lower-quality formulas.
At 10mg (100% RDA), it contributes meaningfully to the body's antioxidant defence network while protecting the integrity of the EPA and DHA this formula is built around. Including both AstaReal® astaxanthin and natural Vitamin E in the same formula reflects a formulation standard where the omega-3s arrive in your cells intact not oxidised.
Peppermint Oil - 30mg · Tolerability and digestive function
Peppermint oil at 30mg is a functional inclusion, not a flavoring decision. Its primary role is to relax the lower esophageal sphincter and reducing the reflux of fish-derived oil that causes the fishy burps most people associate with omega-3 supplementation. This is the most common reason people discontinue fish oil. Addressing it directly in the formulation removes a significant compliance barrier.
Menthol, the primary active compound in peppermint oil, also has antispasmodic activity in the GI tract for supporting digestive comfort and reducing the bloating that high-dose fish oil can cause in sensitive individuals.

How to use
Take 2 soft gels daily with a meal containing fat, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
Why with a fat-containing meal: omega-3 fatty acids are fat-soluble so absorption is significantly higher when taken alongside dietary fat. A meal containing any fat source (eggs, nuts, avocado, dairy, meat) is sufficient. Taking omega-3s on an empty stomach reduces absorption and increases the likelihood of reflux.
Morning vs evening: either works. If you experience any GI sensitivity, evening with dinner tends to be better tolerated. The peppermint oil in this formula significantly reduces reflux risk regardless of timing.
Can be taken alongside: iThrive Vitamin D3+K2 in MCT Oil (fat-soluble vitamins absorb best together with a fat-containing meal so strong synergy), iThrive Active B-Complex (B vitamins support the metabolism of fatty acids), and iThrive Magnesium Bisglycinate (magnesium and omega-3s have complementary cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects).
Note on blood thinners: EPA has mild antiplatelet activity. If you are on anticoagulant medication (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel), consult your healthcare provider before starting omega-3 supplementation at this dose.
Practitioner’s Note
![]() "What I notice most consistently when reviewing clients' supplement histories is how many of them have been taking omega-3s for years without any measurable change in their omega-3 index or inflammatory markers. When we look at what they're taking, it's almost always a standard fish oil softgel with decent EPA/DHA on the label, no information about form, no antioxidant protection, and no consideration of absorption. The omega-3 index which is the percentage of EPA plus DHA in red blood cell membranes, is the most meaningful way to assess omega-3 status. Most people supplementing with standard fish oil still test in the suboptimal range. The shift to phospholipid-form krill, with anchovy providing the therapeutic dose, consistently produces better omega-3 index improvement than fish oil alone at equivalent or lower EPA/DHA doses. The AstaReal® astaxanthin addition is something I find particularly relevant for the clients I work with who are managing cognitive concerns or have high oxidative stress markers, it's one of the few antioxidants that actually reaches the brain. And practically speaking: the peppermint oil removes the compliance barrier. Clients who abandoned fish oil because of the taste/reflux actually stay on this one." Saloni Kulkarni |
